Hot, Sweet, and Sour Cabbage

A simple vegetable dish with a subtle, complex flavor palette.

Hot, Sweet, and Sour Cabbage


  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1 small/medium piece of ginger, ground
  • 1 tsp crushed chinese peppercorns
  • 1 tsp of garlic, ground
  • 1 tbs of scallion


  • 1 heaping tbs sugar
  • 3 tbs vinegar
  • 1 tbs sesame oil
  • 1 tsp soy sauce


Prep Cabbage

  • Cut cabbage into salad-size pieces
  • Sprinkle some salt on and let sit to “sweat out water”, wait at least 20 mins
  • Rinse cabbage to remove salt, and remove excess water in salad spinner

Prepped Ingredients


  • Heat some oil in a pan
  • Add ginger and red pepper and wait for peppers to darken
  • Add cabbage
  • Sir fry few minutes
  • Add sauce and stir fry 1 min
  • Add crushed peppercorns and make sure completely mixed in
