Thai Basil Tofu

A slightly sweet, Thai-inspired vegetarian tofu dish

Thai Basil Tofu

  • one sweet red pepper, cut into 1/2" squares
  • one onion; cut into 1/2" squares
  • one package of fresh basil, wash and pick off leaves from stalk
  • 1/2 lb of bean sprouts; wash and drain
  • one package of fried tofu (this may be hard to get outside of Chinatown—if you can’t get it, substitute with extra firm tofu)
  • a few slices of ginger

  • 2 tbsp soy
  • 1 tbsp Chinese vinegar
  • 1.5 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp wine
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp corn starch
  • a few pinches of white pepper

  • heat 3 tbsp oil, add slices of ginger, stir fry onion until lightly brown
  • add red pepper, stir fry for one min
  • add tofu and stir fry for a couple more minutes
  • add well stirred sauce, stir content until the sauce starts to thicken
  • add bean sprouts, stir for a minute, then add basil and cook for one more minute
